What Does "KPI" Mean? (Corporate Jargon, Decoded)
The plain-English definition
A KPI (key performance indicator) is the small set of numbers a team watches to know if it's winning — the metrics that matter most. Sales, retention, uptime: pick the few that reflect real health and track them.
The measurable replaces the important
Here is the quiet trap inside every KPI program: once a number becomes a target, it stops measuring the thing and starts being gamed. That's Goodhart's Law, and it's why KPIs so often distort the work they were meant to improve. The call center measured on call length hangs up faster. The support team measured on ticket count closes tickets without solving them. What gets measured improves — but what improves is the measurement, not the outcome.
Worse, teams reach for KPIs that are easy to count rather than ones that reflect what matters. "Important" gets quietly swapped for "measurable," and no one notices the substitution until the numbers look great and the product feels worse.
What it usually hides
| What was said | In plain English | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| "Our KPIs are trending up." | The numbers we chose to watch look better. | Whether the underlying thing improved. |
| "We need a KPI for this." | We can't tell if this is working. | A clear definition of success. |
| "Hit your KPIs." | Hit this number, however you do it. | The behavior the number was meant to encourage. |
Is "KPI" a red flag?
The concept isn't; the selection is. A KPI is only as honest as the choice behind it. Beware any KPI that's easy to move but disconnected from what users actually feel.
Try it yourself
For any KPI, ask: what would a person do to game this number? Whatever they'd do is what you'll eventually get.

+Why do KPIs backfire?
Because of Goodhart's Law: once a measure becomes a target, it stops measuring the thing and starts being gamed. Teams reach for numbers that are easy to count rather than ones that reflect what matters.
