Runway means how long a company can keep going before it runs out of cash — measured in months. "We have 18 months of runway" means the money in the bank lasts roughly that long at current burn.

The death countdown that became comfort

Here is the journey of the word: in startups, runway is a literal countdown to death — the months until you can't make payroll. It carries genuine fear and forces hard decisions. Then it migrated into larger companies as a polite synonym for "time" or "buffer," and the urgency drained out. A team lead saying "we have runway on this" just means "we don't have to decide today." The word that once meant "the clock is ticking on our survival" now means "relax, there's no rush."

The problem: when everyone borrows the startup word but not the startup stakes, real deadlines get hidden inside comforting language. "Plenty of runway" can mean either "we're safe" or "we've stopped watching the clock" — and the speaker often doesn't know which.
